España – Cabo verde, making their World Cup debut, delivered one of the largest shocks in recent history by securing a goalless draw against Spain in Atlanta.

Cape Verde, the third least populous nation to qualify for a World Cup, was ranked 67th in FIFA’s most recent listings, and many anticipated that second-ranked Spain would easily defeat them in their first Group H match.

España – Cabo Verde: La Roja Frustrated as Cape Verde Secures Historic Goalless Draw

The current European champions struggled in their offense for extended periods, and whenever Spain posed a threat to the Cape Verde goal, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha thwarted them with several excellent saves.

Lamine Yamal’s introduction as a substitute in the second half energized both his team and the Spain supporters present, but the Barcelona youngster – returning after nearly eight weeks due to a hamstring injury – was unable to deliver a game-changing moment in his World Cup debut.

Ferran Torres squandered Spain’s prime opportunity in the first half, meeting Marc Cucurella’s header returned across the six-yard box, but striking the crossbar while being pressured by Vozinha.

Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted their Euro 2024 winner versus England, was thwarted by an exceptional block from Roberto Lopes of Shamrock Rovers in the final minutes.

As Spain surged forward in the closing moments, they nearly faced a setback at the opposite end – however, they escaped the shame of loss when defender Diney Borges directed a corner straight into the hands of goalkeeper Unai Simon.

España – Cabo Verde: Cape Verde Earns Valuable Point Against Tournament Favorites Spain

España – Cabo verde secured their first World Cup appearance by topping a group that featured Cameroon, but they were not anticipated to pose significant challenges to a Spain team widely predicted to clinch the World Cup title again.

Although numerous heroes donned Cape Verde shirts, veteran goalkeeper Vozinha stood out the most and was near tears as his teammates swarmed around him just after the final whistle.

Vozinha, a player for Chaves in Portugal’s second division, denied Torres and Aymeric Laporte just before the end of the first half and consistently sought to come off his line to gather crosses.

Before him, Cape Verde maintained two solid defensive lines and mostly managed to handle Spain’s gradual buildup effectively.
They attempted 27 shots in total, but merely seven were on target.

The advancement of the eight best third-placed teams to the last 32 means that the point earned against highly regarded Spain will undoubtedly boost the Blue Sharks’ confidence, making them believe they can be the first African debutants to reach the World Cup knockout stage since Ghana in 2006.
