Mexico defeat Ecuador 2-0 to book World Cup last-16 spot and end knockout drought
Mexico got a big win it was a long time coming their first knockout win since the World Cup in 1986 when they played at home.

Mexico beat Ecuador with two goals in the half one from Julian Quinones and one from Raul Jimenez, the final score was 2-0.
The people at the Azteca Stadium were so happy it was a big deal for Mexico.

This win was a deal for Mexico because it was their first win, in the knockout stages of the World Cup since they beat Bulgaria at home in 1986.
Now Mexico will play either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round and they get to play at the Azteca Stadium again which is the last time the stadium will be used in the tournament.
The game started an hour late because of thunderstorms. The bad weather did not stop the fans from getting excited. The stadium was filled with over 80,000 people all wearing green long before the game began.
Mexico played well from the start using the energy of the crowd to their advantage. They almost scored on when Raul Jimenez headed the ball just wide of the goal.
Then a young player named Gilberto Mora came close to scoring an amazing goal. He kicked the ball hard from a tough angle but it went just past the post.
Ecuador managed to deal with the pressure from Mexico at first and even came close to scoring themselves. Gonzalo Plata started an attack that ended with John Yeboah kicking the ball against the post.
Mexico finally scored in the 22nd minute and the crowd went wild. Roberto Alvarado passed the ball to Quinones, who got past an Ecuador player and kicked the ball hard into the goal. This was Quinones third goal of the tournament.

Mexico scored again nine minutes later. This time Ecuador lost control of the ball near their goal and Raul Jimenez started the attack. He passed the ball to Quinones. Then kicked it into the goal for his 47th goal, for Mexico.
After scoring two goals Mexico played with a lot of confidence. They attacked Ecuadors goal again and again. The crowd cheered them on. Ecuador had a time stopping Mexicos attacks.
The second half of the game started with thousands of Mexico supporters shouting “Y si si?” which is a slogan that Mexico supporters have been saying a lot during the tournament. They were saying this because they think this could be the year that Mexico wins. A lot of people were at the Azteca stadium. They were all excited.
After the game started again Ecuador had the ball more. They did not score. They were trying to find a way to get back into the game. They did not threaten Mexicos goalkeeper Rangel.
On the side Mexicos Galindez made a great save when Mexico captain Cesar Montes tried to score with a header. Then Cesar Montes tried to score but the ball went just wide. Mexico was still trying to score from pieces.
Then Mexico coach Javier Aguirre made some changes to his team. He took out Quinones and Jimenez, who had scored goals and Mora, who is 17 years old. Mora got a cheer from the crowd when he left the game because he is the youngest player to start a World Cup game since Pele.
Ecuador tried to score in the few minutes of the game but they could not get past Mexicos defence. Mexico has not let anyone score against them in the tournament yet. Ecuador was getting frustrated and one of their players Piero Hincapie got a card. He got the card because he covered his mouth while he was arguing with Santiago Gimenez.
When the game ended Mexicos players were hugging each other. The crowd was. Cheering to the song “El Rey”, at the Azteca stadium. There were tens of thousands of Mexico supporters celebrating Mexicos win.
