Daveigh Chase Passes Away at 35: Remembering the Ring and Lilo & Stitch Star
Daveigh Chase, the ex-child actress known for voicing the brave Lilo in the celebrated 2002 film Lilo & Stitch and who was honored as Best Villain at the MTV Movies Awards the same year for her chilling performance as the sinister Samara Morgan in The Ring, passed away Tuesday due to complications from meningitis. She was thirty-five.

Her boyfriend Roy Hernandez informed TMZ about her death, having recently created a GoFundMe page for the ailing Chase. Hernandez noted that “Daveigh has been recently diagnosed with meningitis and multiple severe blood infections.” Her situation has deteriorated, and the physicians informed me she might not have long to live.”
Hernandez informed TMZ that a blood infection resulted in “septic problems and caused her body to shut down.”
Daveigh Chase Early Childhood
Born as Daveigh Elizabeth Chase on July 24, 1990, in Las Vegas and brought up in Albany, Oregon, Daveigh Chase began her career as a child performer at age 7, featuring in commercials and on stage. At the age of 8, she started featuring in TV shows like Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, Charmed, The Practice, and ER. In 2001, she was selected for the role of Samantha Darko in Richard Kelly’s cult movie Donnie Darko featuring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.
She provided the voice for Chihiro Ogino in the 2001 English version of the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away, but her major breakthrough and initial signature role occurred in 2002 when she voiced one of the main characters in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.
Her portrayal of Lilo, a Hawaiian girl without parents who forms a bond with an alien she thinks is a puppy.
Lilo calls her new companion Stitch. Daveigh Chase provided the voice for the character in multiple sequels and the television series from 2003 to 2006.
In 2002, Daveigh Chase was featured in Gore Verbinski’s successful horror film The Ring. At just 12 years old, Chase became the recognizable character and ghostly face of the film, portraying Samara Morgan, the pale-haired girl in white with deadly supernatural abilities. At the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, she received the title of Best Villain, surpassing Willem Dafoe from Spider-Man, Daniel Day-Lewis from Gangs of New York, Colin Farrell from Daredevil, and Mike Myers, who played both Dr. Evil and Goldmember in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Following his role in Thomas Dekker’s 2016 horror movie Jack Goes Home, Chase mostly stepped back from acting. On the GoFundMe page, Hernandez mentions numerous challenges faced by the actor, such as bullying and a rift with her family. Chase, he writes, “fought to discover safety and joy in downtown LA,” yet the two “experienced sparks of happiness and optimism” until her recent health problems. As reported by TMZ, Daveigh Chase was hospitalized earlier this month due to malnutrition.
