Convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann made a short statement at his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, June 17, after the relatives of his victims denounced him—one demanding that he face her while she read her victim-impact statement, and others labeling him a coward.
Rex Heuermann Breaks His Silence During Sentencing Hearing
“There are no words to express,” Heuermann stated in the crowded Riverhead, N.Y., courtroom after Judge Timothy Mazzei inquired if he wanted to speak to the court. “The expressions I would use lack significance.”
Mazzei then inquired of Heuermann if he experienced any regret for his actions towards his eight victims.
“Indeed, I am,” Heuermann responded.
The judge expressed his agreement with Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, who had just informed the court: “I am confident that this defendant feels remorse.” He regrets being discovered.
“Mazzei said to Heuermann, ‘You are a repulsive and contemptible little man.'” “If you are indeed a man.”

“And you are a coward,” the judge remarked. Mazzei subsequently sentenced Heuermann and instructed court officers to take him out of the courtroom. “Take him away,” Mazzei said, prompting applause. As Heuermann was taken away, several of the victims’ relatives broke into applause and shouted “ogre.”
Rex Heuermann, 62, received three life sentences without parole and an extra 25 years to life for the killings of seven women from 1993 to 2010.
The killings remained unresolved until Heuermann’s capture in 2023.
Heuermann also confessed in April to murdering an eighth woman for which he was not formally charged.
